chapter 1) to the evaluation of quantitative trait loci (QTL’s,
by Snoeck, chapter 3); bioinformatics (by Hackney and Moore, chapter
29) to flow cytometry (by Srour and Yoder, chapter 4). The book
is further broken into detailed sections devoted to certain model
organisms and systems including Drosophila
(chapter 7), Xenopus (chapters
8 through 11), zebrafish (chapters 12 and 13), the chick (chapter
14), mice (chapters 15 through 26) and finally, humans (chapters
27 and 28). Given the availability of primate systems for hematopoietic
investigation (including those from an embryonic stem cell starting
point), the lack of a chapter summarizing these important tools
is one shortcoming though perhaps a case of gilding the lily were
it present, as the book already presents a wealth of fine material.
With entries outlining many key in vivo and
in vitro procedures
(such as transplantation assays, conditional transgene systems,
and thymic organ culture), this volume is something that every hematology
research laboratories would benefit from having in its library.
The book is broken into 29 chapters over four parts, is 464 pages,
fully indexed, and illustrated with numerous figures, tables, and
photographs including ten color plates.”
